Becoming

There is a version of us that learned, early on, how to be acceptable.

It learned what to say in certain rooms, how to carry itself in front of certain people, which parts to show and which ones to hide. It became so good at it that, at some point, we stopped noticing we were doing it at all.

Carl Jung called this the Persona: the mask. Not a lie, but a performance so rehearsed it begins to feel like identity. This exhibit walks through three stages Jung described in the process of individuation: the lifelong movement toward becoming a whole, authentic self.

The question isn’t who should I be – but who am I, when no one is asking?
